YOU GOTTA SEE THIS: “Wings” by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis
At first, I couldn’t help but think, “Okay. He’s rapping about shoes.” But Macklemore‘s “Wings” (and its beautifully directed accompanying video) is about more than Nikes: it’s about the ironclad grip of consumerism and its connection to social acceptance. Macklemore mulls over the issue through the lens of his childhood self, discussing it both personally and, dare I say, philosophically. And while the little boy does lose his fancy kicks, the man Macklemore still looks pretty cool; which, to me, illustrates that the materialistic trap is pretty hard to escape.
