Oakland’s Club Night is making waves with their debut EP Hell Ya, the product of their recent addition to the roster of Carolinas-based label Tiny Engines, and the EP wastes no time blasting out of the blocks with “Shear.” The kickoff track aims otherworldly, where the psych could stand for psychedelic or psychotic, anchored to earth only by a pummeling rhythm section. Expect to see their name saddled with the word quirky, but know that there’s a method to Club Night’s madness; it just takes a few spins to become hypnotized. It’s the sound of waking up from a weird dream, physically refreshed, but somewhat askew…

The quintet fell together naturally, with ex-members of Meat Market, Twin Steps, and Sad Bitch combining forces. First single “Rally” is a great introduction to the band (hear below) and “Well” stands out as a highlight. Final cut “Work” is where it all comes together, with a joyousness reminiscent of the Dirty Projectors’ excursion into the weird, finding hooks where you least expect them. Save the date of 10/11 to catch Club Night live in San Francisco at the Hemlock Tavern with Peaer & Sinai Vessel.
