SoCal Report: The Active Set

April 13. 2012 | By Jason Martinez

LA’s The Active Set touch a lot of bases on their debut full-length ’11. “Famous for Dying” has some of We Are Scientists‘ post-punk flavor. “Sea Legs” calls to mind Band of Horses, riding an extended, jammy bridge past the five-minute mark. On harder tracks like “It Multiplies,” frontman Matthew Stolarz’ old job playing bass with punkers, the Briggs, is a bit more apparent, albeit as just one element in their mix.

With jangly guitars and classic “ooh, aah” backing vocals, “Valley Born” has been getting play on KROQ’s Locals Only. Like a lot of their songs, it has subtle electronic touches in its DNA. Its catchy hooks give us hope that The Active Set is a band just starting to scratch its potential.

The Active Set play Kreuzberg, California (yep, that’s the name of the venue!) in San Luis Obispo, CA on Saturday, April 21, and The Bull Bar in Long Beach, CA on Fri, May 11.
