YOU GOTTA SEE THIS: “Full Impartial” by The Assembly Line

April 11. 2012 | By Jon Patton

For The Assembly Line’s “Full Impartial,” director Timothy Bailey stuck with a lot of close shots, a perfect way to tell a simple short story about a breakup. And although singer Thornfin Nguyen stays deadpan the whole time, we get a whole range of emotions from his departing lover and get some insight into the characters’ decayed relationship through flashbacks that intrude on daily life like in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Like that movie, this song doesn’t exactly have a happy ending (or maybe it does — listen to Nguyen’s first two lines about the “monster in his bed” and you’ll see she’s making the right decision), but it does have closure, and that’s always tough to get in just four minutes.
