LIVE REVIEW: Treasure Island Music Festival 2012, Day 2

October 19. 2012 | By Jay Raco

Sunday/Day 2 featured an epic rock lineup of over seven straight hours of excellent music.  San Francisco’s own Ty Segall thrashed his way through songs about Haight Street and seemed to be enjoying himself.

Fellow Californian Joanna Newsom hypnotized the fans with her haunting voice and brilliance on the harp. Her siren song “Cosmia” may have caused a few boats to crash into the island.

Bethany Cosentino/Best Coast (also from Cali. Is there a theme here?) played a solid set dedicated to our Golden State with the highlights being “Our Deal,” “When I’m with You,” and “The Only Place.”

The supergroup, The Divine Fits, made up of Dan Boeckner of Wolf Parade, Spoon‘s Brit Daniels, and the drummer in the New Bomb Turks, Sam Brown. They brought a lot of energy to the show with full blown dance circles breaking out to their mixture synth and rock. “My Love is Real” is one of the best songs of the year and was a huge highlight of the whole weekend.

We’d been looking forward to seeing M83for what feels forever. We expected our heads to implode due to their awesomeness, and…they were pretty good. Maybe we expected too much, that the openness of the festival would be ideal for their huge sound, and they sounded great, but they were better in my imagined expectation. “Intro” and “Outro” were the best tracks of the set and built to a dramatic peak.

The xx were the only band that made the fans wait a little, and by the time they came out, the smoke machine was rocking and shrouding the band in mystery. Serious Mystery. It was really The xx that tipped the scales to Sunday as the better day, and their romantic cathedral odes to love and heartbreak had the crowd fully invested. “Angels” started the set and had a full blown chorus of mostly female voices singing along. “Crystalised,” “Heart Skipped A Beat,” and “Islands” were slowed down and kept a closer pace to their latest record Coexist. It created a cohesive feel, and every song worked. As the set wound down, the beat of “Intro” from their debut served as an exit song for the crowd as they danced and skipped across the grounds.
