HEAR THIS: Joshua Hyslop

July 19. 2011 | By Jamie Lynn

Vancouver’s own singer/songwriter, Joshua Hyslop, has one EP to his credit (so far-Nettwerk has signed him for a full album), Cold Wind and already the comparisons to indie folk/pop genre heavyweights Iron and Wine, Ryan Adams, and Damien Rice are piling on. The music evokes a peaceful atmosphere while his lyrics are intimate little glimpses into the windows to his life. His music moves from cello and violin on “Nowhere Left to Go” to Spanish jazz guitar and upbeat “If I Was a Better Man” and finishes with the lushly arranged “We Have Seen” complete with banjo and gospel choir. His music quietly teases us, making sure we are looking toward the horizon in anticipation of what is to come.
