HEAR THIS: Alexz Johnson

After starring in a TV series, signing and getting dropped by Epic, female singer songwriter, Alexz Johnson is making her own music now. We should really thank Epic Records for dropping her, and thank fans and Kickstarter for funding her tour, or we might not have this Skipping Stone EP. Starting with the infectious “Give Me Fire,” Alexz delivers the depth of Adele“s “Rumor Has It” combined with vocals similar to the Cults” 60s female throwback sound. Don”t be surprised if you find yourself humming the chorus after giving it a listen because it”s a real treat.
“Walking,” in contrast, is a crooning, acoustic tale of heartbreak intertwined with a passionate chorus asking, “why am I walking in
circles when I have nowhere to go?” We don”t think we”re completely delusional by saying there”s a Jenny Lewis vibe going on here either. Another highlight is “Theif,” an enjoyably soulful take on what sounds like
a catchy Tegan and Sara song, made all her own with her guitar playing. Alexz Johnson”s impressive vocal range, dynamic songwriting, and guitar skills make Skipping Stone a must-listen.
