LIVE REVIEW: Maps & Atlases with The Big Sleep @ The Troubadour, LA 6/8/12

June 15. 2012 | By Andre Cruz

Maps and Atlases are currently on tour in support of their stellar release, Beware And Be Grateful, which was released earlier this year. Big Sleep were already on stage upon arrival and doing their best at warming up the crowd for Maps and Atlases. The response from the attendees was very positive and for good reason. The three piece band played with a ton of confidence, stretching some of their songs into full on jam sessions. As soon as they said their goodbyes, the main floor quickly began to fill up with eager concert-goers.

Now it was Maps and Atlases’ turn to showcase their new material as well as some of their older tunes. And not for one second of their entire set did they disappoint. The band captivated the crowd for a little over an hour and had them dancing and singing along to every song. New songs like “Fever”, Winter” and “Remote and Dark Years” were very cool to experience live. To witness their flawless execution of each song and the improvisations they add to some of them is just something you cant help but admire. Andy Warren said, “Maps and Atlases are a band you have to see live. They are simply put, very talented musicians.” The band showed some of these talents on “The Charm,” when bassist Shiraz Dada and guitarist Erin Elders abandoned their instruments and joined drummer extroadinaire Chris Hainey on percussion. While Dave Davison’s dramatic vocals and quiet guitar strumming put the crowd into a trance. Other songs they played from Perch Patchwork were “Living Decorations,” “Israeli Caves,” and “Solid Ground” — which made the main floor turn into one massive dance party. The band came out for a brief encore in which they proceeded to play songs off their older EPs. It was met with great response considering all the requests that were made throughout the night. The band ended thanking the Los Angeles fans stating “This is one of our favorite places to play.”
