HEAR THIS: :Papercutz

July 05. 2012 | By Amanda Sorvig

:papercutz is an electro-pop artist similar to acts like Poliça, The Knife, or Crystal Castles. The project is lead by singer/songwriter Bruno Miguel, in collaboration with guest artists. Currently, Miguel is working with vocalist Melissa Veras. Their different backgrounds are apparent; Bruno hailing from Portugal and Melissa from New York. The combination is edgy and obscure, yet cultured and dream-like. At times, their sound is almost industrial, swelling to sharp angles and blunt percussion. Very much like The Knife, :papercutz lives on the fine line between harsh and accessible electro-pop. It is beautiful, but also dark. :papercutz is able to mesh the two perfectly. “Rivers”, the first single off of the sophomore album, demonstrates the combination well. Miguel has set dark beats behind Veras’ soft, whispery vocals. It’s a track we could listen to over and over again and hear something new each time.

:papercutz is due to release their second album, The Blur Between Us, on July 10. We owls can’t wait to hear the full album!
