HEAR THIS: Fly Golden Eagle

July 31. 2012 | By Sean Morris

Considering they’ve been around for a few years, Fly Golden Eagle is impressively elusive. Their cryptic bio is full of stonerrific platitudes like “Tomorrow is not here yet, so today we will dance to the melodic sounds of the digital underground.” Inadvertent “Humpty Hump” allusion aside, FGE’s psychedelic-garage-funk-tronica definitely sets hips a-swiveling.

Swagger, released last November, doesn’t draw from the past so much as it collects influences and introduces them to one another, Bill & Ted-style. The Nashville quartet travels to the early ’90s, picks up The Black Crows and Red Hot Chili Peppers, drops them off at AM Gold, collects some Nuggets, and invites everyone back to the present for a jam session with Ariel Pink and Toro Y Moi. FGE recently rocked Bonnaroo, and in the coming months will be doing shows with Alabama Shakes and Big Freedia (unfortunately, not together).
