After a slow tease of singles and an EP, Bay Area guitar funk outfit A Million Billion Dying Suns unveils the first single from their forthcoming debut AMBDS, and it’s a corker. “The Garden” takes a more stripped-down T-Rexian approach to the matter at hand, before exploding into their soon-to-be-patented Cosmic Funk. For A Million Billion Dying Suns, the brainchild of Nate Mercereau, transcendant is the keyword, and they set the controls for the heart of the sun. Look for that album in September, and, if you’re new to their game, look backwards and catch up. The best place to start is their take on Shuggie Otis’ “Strawberry Letter 23” that nods not only to its creator, but bows towards the subsequent Brothers Johnson cover as well. In the end, it comes out pure AMBDS.
