DITTIES FROM DOWN UNDER: Young Romantics

December 03. 2012 | By Augustus Welby

Sydney four-piece Young Romantics sound like a neon oasis in the middle of an unloving desert. New single “Forget My Past” brings together the fair complexions of Echo and the Bunnymen and Simple Minds with a primal Lynchian danger. A sentimental streak has led them to an abysmal realization: sincere romance will inevitably be crushed by the violence of reality. However, led by Dave Jenkins Jr., they adapt their rattled romance to account for the ephemeral other. This is echoed in the dual guitar work; one is a mattress of effect-laden invitation, while the other twangs like an uncouth cactus. The stern rhythm section reminds you that despite extreme highs and lows you still have to walk on the earth.
