HEAR THIS: Bare Mutants

Bare Mutants are an experiment gone hideously right. It’s the songwriting vehicle of Jered Gummere formerly frontman to Chicago art-punks The Ponys, and their new album The Affliction is out now on In the Red Records. On the same label are fellow garage-rock warriors The Dirtbombs, Fuzz, and Ty Segall. However, these songs are more detailed than the standard three-chord fare on the label: the simple and unfussy melodies, the echo and boom in the production and hooks, the subtle and evocative backing vocals. On songs like “Without You,” one of the label’s songs of the year, Mutants bare their hearts before us and the fruit of that loud and dazzling labor is yours to enjoy.
