Album Review: “Swoon” Silversun Pickups

Silversun Pickups
Swoon
[Dangerbird Records]

Fans of LA-based Silversun Pickups’ debut record, rejoice — or, should I say, get ready to Swoon: the foursome’s sophomore effort is anything but a slump. Hook-filled and jam-packed with the Pickups’ signature dreamy sound, Swoon is the logical successor to 2006’s Carnavas without coming off as a remake. Standout tracks include the rich and string-laced “The Royal We” and “Draining,” a softer, almost trance-like mid-album respite. “Substitution” is refreshingly clean, a clear indication of the band’s progress and willingness to experiment. The closer — “Surrounded” — could have been a B-side off of Carnavas, but all in all, Silversun Pickups have given us a lasting and thoroughly enjoyable second album.
