Alt-J are continuing to ride the wave of success their exceptional debut

album An Awesome Wave provided. As one of the more talked about bands that would be playing this years Coachella Music and Arts Festival, Alt-J made a ”Localchella” stop at The Observatory in Santa Ana to a sold out crowd.

After an ambitious set by Hundred Waters, Alt-J came out to the rambuctious cheers of fans. The band took to the stage and with no introduction proceeded to play “Intro,” “(Ripe & Ruin),” and “Tessellate,” which happen to be the first three tracks off their debut album.

The crowd seemed in awe at the beginning of the night, slowly letting loose as the band continued to take us on a musical journey of colors and sounds. The colors came in the form of the stage”s backdrop,

a replica of their album artwork. A magnified radar image of the Ganges river delta that changed colors, adding to the band”s magical aura. When Alt-J paused for a moment in between songs, keyboardist Gus Unger-Hamilton could barely be heard introducing “Buffalo” by saying, “It”s great to be back! This song is about buffaloes.”

The crowd”s energy intensified when “Dissolve Me” began, everyone danced freely with hands in the air. “Fitzpleasure” kept the same kind of energy amongst the night”s participants. At this point of the night, it seemed as if the fans were unconciously slaves to Alt-J”s commanding presence. Gus mentioned being overwhelmed with praise, only a year ago they had opened for a band in the smaller Constellation Room and now were headlining a sold out show in the main room.

The band transitioned effortlessly into songs, sounding as perfect as their recordings. After a brief pause the band came out to perform “Hand Made,” a cover of College”s “Hero” and “Taro.” The band had delivered on all fronts, never a disappointing or dull moment. As the crowd left the venue, all topics of conversation were of how the band is so amazing live. And we couldn”t agree more.
