Chicagoans The Sea and Cake have continued to make stellar indie-pop tunes for nearly two decades, a feat few bands can achieve. Saturday night they brought their chill vibes to the Bootleg in Los Angeles with an opening set by Matthew Friedberger of Fiery Furnaces.

Friedberger’s solo performance was difficult for many audience members to wrap their head around, a sort of narrative set to half pre-recorded soundtrack, half live composition.

After 40 minutes of trying to decipher Friedberger’s babbling and a quick set change, the headlining quartet took to their instruments. Like their records, The Sea and Cake’s live show is best experienced with a glass of wine on a chilly night. While they might not expel the greatest amount of energy on stage, they are surely a treat to the ears with their swiftly fluttering and meandering tunes.
