Only Good Thoughts Can Stay
[Tender Loving Empire]

Jared Mees & the Grown Children’s Only Good Thoughts Can Stay feels like one of the best thoughts out there. The album is one part Murder by Death, another part sunshine and another part country ho-down.

“Graverobbers” is one of the best tracks on the album, with a chorus of “ohs” and “ahs” bringing everything to the forefront. The track feels vibrant and airy. This is the type of song that makes you wish summer was here already. “Even Little Mountains” starts with an electric feeling – it feels like an early Minus the Bear track. That is until the brass instruments break in and bring a ska like feeling to the track. Things begin to feel dramatic, big band and bright. “Shake” is another track that fits nicely into the album’s motif of driving things to a rising pulse. The track allows for the album’s title to come from a sweet lyric mid track. Bringing optimism and more sunshine, the track is uplifting. Even “Inaudible Song I” and “Inaudible Song II” drive on with a sweet but fitting feeling of epiphany. The latter brings warm lyrics and an exciting guitar line that makes the “Inaudible Song II” one of the best tracks on the album.

Only Good Thoughts Can Stay should be the album of choice for anyone looking for something bright but still accessible.
