“My Neighbor/My Creator” Wye Oak
Wye Oak
My Neighbor/My Creator
[Merge Records]
The name of this Baltimore ‘indie folk’ duo comes from the Maryland state tree. As if some creative genius weren’t already coming out of the DC area like Beach House (whom we checked out last week at Bimbo’s), Wye Oak delivers its third album just after massive praise from last years The Knot.
The latest, My Neighbor/My Creator is a 5 song EP of some old favorites and a few new tunes, including DJ Mickey Free rapping on the last track. It goes down easy if you like girls that play a mean guitar and sing real pretty. Front woman/guitarist Jenn Wasner along with drummer/bassist (with one hand while the other drums) Andy Stark bring some real melodic edge with songs like “I hope you die” and “My Neighbor,” yet fall short as a truly ‘complete’ EP when Mickey Free ‘raps’ on the last track, “That I do.” They’re a band you should know and check out on Sunday, April 25th at Bottom of the Hill (I don’t think Mickey will be coming) in support of  Shearwater and Hospital Ships.
Check out the free download of “I hope you die” a dark track off the album, over at Stereogum (or right-click song title) and the video below from their latest NPR session.
