Kyle Andrews
Kangaroo
[Elephant Lady Records]
Nashville-based Kyle Andrews has seen his share of ups and downs as a musician. His do-it-yourself recording style has shown he can write an electronic dance song like no other (“Sushi”) as well as simple ballads that tug on your heart strings (“You Feel Left Out”). His first album Amos In Ohio, earned much praise from critics in 2006, yet his last release Real Blasty mostly went under the radar for listeners.
His latest release Kangaroo is a six song EP lacking the depth of his previous albums. Andrews wrote most of these songs in a ‘depressed’ state in his bedroom studio and somehow the EP took on a happier vibe. The remix of “Sushi” has been slowed way down and if you’ve heard the original, you’ll immediately dismiss the “slow dancing at the prom” remix.
Overall, Kangaroo is a pretty good EP, but lacks the continuity one should hear on any given album. His switch from electro to mainstream pop is all over the place and the songs may be great, but the overall message is lost on this listener.
Make sure you watch the world record breaking video for “You Always Make Me Smile” with 120,000 water balloons and 4,000 people. The song itself is considered the single off the album and we’ve got a free download of it below.
