I’m Having Fun Now
[Warner Bros.]
The announcement of Rilo Kiley’s Jenny Lewis teaming up with boyfriend, Johnathan Rice, on a record brought with it excitement, and, to be honest, apprehension. Fans of Lewis struggled with the idea of their indie sweetheart sharing the spotlight…that is, until “Scissor Runner” and “Big Wave” dropped.
I’m Having Fun Now is chock full of sweet girl/boy harmonies and summer-loving catchy tunes. The duo create flawless old-school rock ‘n’ roll sprinkled with the sweet southern charm of Lewis’ slightly-twangy vocals. One would assume that Lewis would be the dominating voice on the album but Rice shares equal responsibilities.
I was captivated with the intricate arrangements and fell head over heels after one spin. My only complaint is that I’m Having Fun Now drops on the cusp of September, when kids are returning to school and long summer nights are winding down. This is a true summer album; it should have been a part of my evening drives down Highway 1.
