TRACKS OF THE WEEK – 11/1/18 Edition

November 01. 2018 | By Wayne Jessup

2018 will go down as a pretty unbearable year, but if there’s one thing to tip the scales back toward righteousness, leave the job to Obnox. Cleveland’s finest provides the anthem “I Hate Everything,” from Bang Messiah, released just this month on Smog Veil Records. San Francisco’s The Y Axes commandeered Bay Area punk HQ 924 Gilman for the video “Empty Space,” a first taste of their new LP No Waves, forthcoming in 2019. Catch them live at the Independent in San Francisco on November 16th.

Two mid-year releases still in the rotation at The Nest are the latest from The Pauses and Tanukichan. Hailing from Orlando, The Pauses “Digital Detox” combines a glitchy sensibility nailed to a rock hard bottom end, providing a sugar coating to slide across a darker lyrical vision than you might expect on first pass. Full album Unbuilding, produced by J Robbins, is on Arctic Rodeo Records. Oakland’s Tanukichan, (Hannah van Loon), provides an always welcome blast of Bay Area shoegaze with “Lazy Love,” from her debut full length Sundays. Having closed out the season on the deck at Sophia’s Thai Kitchen in Davis, California, Tanukichan is currently on the east coast, working back to this side of the country for shows in November.

Closing out this edition of Tracks of the Week on a dreamy note, say hello to New Paltz quintet Girl Gaze. “Suddenly” has a stark, chanson vibe that will send you to repeat. Fade Out is their debut cassette, released on October 26th on Team Love Records.
